Lying in Islam is OK. Muhammad him self lied when he said he is a messenger from God, he lied when his wife caught him sleeping with her maid Mary, he told her that he was going to withdraw himself and live alone when he went and lived alone a whole month with Mary. He broke his promise to Banu Qurayza. Well what you have mentioned about the say of prophet Mohammad is right but do you know what does mean or the scenario???
To try to avoid conflicts at home with your wife is OK but not to do bad things and then you lie! it is not the case.
To deceive your enemy in the situation of war and only war you lie at them and this is tack tick of war and not to be idiot and tell your enemy who is confronting you your tack tick.
To settle the conflict between friends you try to make the things smaller than they perceive because creating relationship is better than breaking relationship " and I'll mention a scenario for you to explain it
T o say to one guy that say Ahmed is saying good things about your previous relationship and you tell the other one that Nasser asked me to send greetings to you"
So, it is a matter of positive and not negative relations as you perceived so, not reading one Haddith and just rushing to say this Islam, but try to understand the whole concept.

Mohammad PBUH brought Islam to smart people so if you can't understand then this is your problem. It is very clear that lying is the most rejected sin in Islam and the holy Quran and the tradition of the prophet is full of evidences. One time the prophet was asked if a Muslim may steel, he answered may be, then asked if a Muslim may commit adultery he answered may be, and when asked if a Muslim may commit lying he answered never. Mohammad was just a prophet who conveyed the message of God (Who knows best) and he didn't invent any thing from his own mind.
