I switched at about 3 months and mine were fine. Lots of people have never heard of this before but small kittens will eat litter and the clumping kind causes blockages in their intestines. Good luck!

Kittens And Clumping Litter

"Litter boxes. Use regular litter, not the clumping kind! Small kittens can lick themselves, swallow the clumping litter, and suffer dangerous blockages in their digestive track! Once the kitten is 3 months old, they can safely use the clumping litter."

3 Months old before you switch to clumping litter. I don't think it's set in stone, but it's a guideline to help protect the kittens from having something like that happen to them. I'm sure they had kittens that it happened to, hence why the guidelines.

I hope that helps to answer your question. The website I got this info from is in the "sources" section.

Hm, I'm taking this recommendation from a Siamese breeder. They state to not use clumping litter until the kitten is 6 months old, as they tend to eat litter.

Another place says they can safely use clumping litter at 3 months old.

I've never heard of this. i don't think that there are any age requirements for being able to use clumping litter. I have 2 cats that I raised from kittens and have always used clumping litter without any problems.

I used regular litter for my kittens from about 10 weeks. And they had been trained to it before that. The only time I used anything else was when I took them for spaying and neutering.

You can switch to clumping litter at any age. However, cats get used to one litter and don't like it when you change, this is a leading cause of cats to eliminate outside of the litter box. My suggestion to you is to put two litter boxes next to eachother and see which one he picks. Cats are very fussy over texture. I learned alot about litter when I got my litter fussy kitten over the summer. I could not get her to change litter, every time I tried I found accidents behind my couch. Now I used Cat attract litter and have had no accidents, it's a clumping litter and is 100% guarantee you cat will love it. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have never heard of age recommendations on kitty litter. Food yes, but litter no. I don't see why you couldn't use clumping litter at any age.

Age has NOTHING to do with it.. It is merely a preference of YOURS.. I prefer ONLY clumping but a friend of mine insists ONLY on the non clumping kind. why, I do not know but for the kitty.. you can use either depending on YOUR desires, not the kitty.
