The governments henchmen and stealth tax collectors usually.
In my towns police HQ there are 2 desks manned until 10pm.
One has an ignorant apathetic arrogant civilian clerk and the other is marked "immigrants only".Paid to sit there all day evertday on the off chance that an immigrant may come in.Yet the police moan about lack of resource funding.
I think no one has respect for the police anymore, since mrs thatcher left govt, the recruiting standard has drpped off the radar
Now we have a force of semi illiterate , 4'10" ,gay, politically correct creeps with chips on their shoulders.and the higher up the ranks the worse they get!
I know its getting a little cliched , but catch some real criminals, instead of spying on us , collecting our data for "our own protection" and bullying hard working taxpaying motorists.

As the largest and most visible of the UK's law enforcement agencies, the Police Force has become an everyday feature of modern society, aiming to provide the public with a safe environment in which to live and work.
The main objective of the first police force was to work with the cooperation of the public to ensure law and order, and its success stemmed from the deliberately civil and courteous manner in which the police constables were instructed to address the public. This basic premise has not changed, and the modern police force exist to protect the public and keep the peace throughout the UK.

The role of the police force in any part of UK is to enforce and uphold the laws of the land which have been passed in parliament by the people's elected representatives.
The police are not to act as social workers. Their function is to act on behalf of the people to enforce the laws of the land.
In UK we have policing by consent. Central government do not pay the police. The police are paid by local councils from money collected in the form of council tax.

The role of the police force is to keep the general public safe, and make sure everyone gets on with their life fairly kerfuffle-free.
Whether or not they do that could be debated...

Their main role is the internal security of the State, that's why you see so many cops at public demonstrations, yet, when an individual needs a cop,he/she,can't get one.Remember the miners strike?'Serving & protecting' the public,is their secondary role.
