We have two boys age 3 and 5. We went over to a couple’s house for dinner. They have two children close to the same age. Their back yard is fenced in and I did check it out and there was no apparent dangers out there. Anyway the kids ask to go out there and play. I said it was ok with me but the wife of the other couple said that someone had to be out there with them. An adult someone. So her husband and I sat out there for a while with them. Later she ask if we let our kids play outside by themselves. I said yes in our fenced in back yard for short periods of time. We check on them every 5min or so but yes. She ask if were not scared something would happen to them. At this point I just wanted to end this line of questing so I playfully said " no not really, we are still young and can have more if something happens to one of them" . Of course I was joking but she could not believe that I would ever say something like that. Was she over reacting or was it my bad taste in a joke?

Very cute comeback, That's something I would say. I also say "Hey, if you cant take a joke, then "F" ya all" . She's way to serious for my taste. Just think of how nerotic her kids are going to be and be thankful your the way you are.

This woman sounds like she has a stick up her bum. There is nothing wrong with letting children play in their own fenced yard without mom and dad breathing down their neck. Does she watch them every second they play in their own room? That is ridiculous. My kids are 6 & 3 and they can play in our yard but it is right off the living room and they are in my direct line of site. If I'm busy then I just check on them every few minutes. But they do not need mom out there every second. If they ask me to come play then I do.
As for your comment, you were obviously joking and I think it was funny. She sounds like a very unhappy person.

The joke was in bad taste but the children need a little independance to grow. If you let them play in a safe closed place and check on them often I dont see the harm in it

I too have 3 and 5 year old. I think it was overreacted to but some people are just uptight in that way. Don't sweat over it i don't think it was in bad taste everyone would know it was a joke.

I thought it was funny, that is the sense of humor my friends have too.
Remember, some parents are more protective than others. I think it would be okay for your boys to play outside alone in a fenced in backyard...as long as you do check on them.
Everyone parents differently.

I agree with the other posts here. Kinda a bad joke, but yet all Mother's take thing's in different ways. Some days I'm very serious about my son & other days I need an ice breaker in our ways & do crack a very bad joke. Maybe you should of made it clear that you love your children very much, in case she was too stupid to have noticed.

She was totally over reacting. My husband and I make jokes like that all the time about our son. We make jokes in front of other people all the time. If they don't like it, oh well! We aren't going to act uptight just because they can't take a joke.

Some people are way too serious. I think it was funny. I have a child. I can understand why she would think it was distasteful. But she needs to understand that you were joking and that you love your kids more than anything in the world.

when my sister was pregnant with #3 everyone kept asking her why she wanted another one because she already had a boy and a girl. she said ' what if something happened to one of them?' no one else thought it was hilarious but us. we must have a warped sense of humor.

lol, thats really bad, but really funny humor. I think the lady you were talking to is a little uptight. Although it depends what kind of neighborhood you in. I may be alittle paranoid too.
