I think it is too young for a real cell phone.
Now, that being said, someone else made a good point about kids using them to talk to their parents while on their way to school when the parent is unable to take them. I think that this is an example of the only reason a child should have a cell phone. And for those kind of extenuating circumstances, a 'real' cell phone is not warranted; it could be one of those FireFlys or a prepaid phone.

Yes. There is no need for a child that young to have a cell phone. It isn't just the cost for such an "accessory" it is the need for the child to talk to his parents. With a cell phone you can be calling from anywhere. You can double check with a home phone that the child is where they say they are. My daughter gave her son a two way radio he can carry on his hip when he goes to the park.If he has any problems he can contact his parents for help.Just for the record he is not permitted to go to the park alone even though you have a clear view of the park from his kitchen window.

My daughter wanted a cell when she was 8, so I sat down with her and explained the way they work. I agreed to get a pre-paid phone for her first to see if she could be responsible. As it turned out, she did very well, I got her a phone on my plan and it only costs 10 dollars more a month for the xtra phone, and heck maybe oneday she'll use some of those roll-over minutes. So have faith in your children and give them a chance- they are just "LITTLE PEOPLE"!!!

I sincerely do not think so. As long as they adhere to the rules you set at the beginning(emergencies, change in pickup location, late for any reason). With all the activities that kids have nowadays, I know where he is supposed to be at and at what time he is supposed to be there, but sometimes schedules change. For example, the soccer team was supposed to be at the park until 4:00 pm, but it started raining hard, so the coach moved everyone into the multi use room. When I got to the park, and no one was there, a quick phone call to his cell told me exactly where to pick him up instead of me calling around to find the team.
I went back and forth on it for a long time, but in the end, I ended up getting him his own cell and I get the call log on it, and the only calls he has made was to my cell, and the only calls he has received is from me. If ever there was another number on there, you know that I would very quickly find out who it is.

OH my please don't tell me you are one of those mothers that at the age of 8 or 9 give there child a cell phone. Who do they actually need to talk too. That to me is kids just being a spoiled brat and the parents are just being lazy to actually do something with there child. At nine they should always be with an adult in there presence and if there not then there is a problem. I have a 8 yr old son and I would be pissed if my son even fixed his mouth to ask me for a phone. Shoot for what they 9 not 19 when they are old enough to buy the phone and its bill then I say great until then Be a parent and say no for once. (This is not generated at you but to all parents that are ridiculous enough to actually by a phone for there kid. Get it KID)

a big YES! I think parents should wait until the child can drive, then there's a valid reason for a cell phone. I made it without one until I was 21, but do wish I had one when driving just incase- especially when it was icy outside and I ended up wrecking into a ditch- nobody was around, so I had a hard time getting home.

Under normal circumstances, I would say yes. But theres a 3rd grader in my neighborhood that has to walk to school by herself and she stays on the cell phone with her mother the entire walk to school so that her mom knows she made it ok. This girl's mother is disabled, thats why she has to walk to school by herself. So in this case, no, its not a bad idea for a 9 yr old to have a cell phone. But only in this case!

Yes. My nephew bugged his parents until they finally gave in and got him a RAZR. He is still in elementary school and claimed it was a status symbol (they live in a ritzy and very rich neighborhood). It does not matter if it is a status symbol, but kids are too young to realize the complexities of responsibility on things like cell phones. We all grew up without them and we came out fine. I don't even like having a cell phone, but it's expected of grown ups.
If you are worried about him/her being able to call someone in an emergency, get one of those little things with like five buttons that allows the user to call mom, dad, one or two other people (like Grandma or an aunt/uncle), and an emergency number.

Yes. Cell phones can purchased now where the caller can only call certain numbers. If he was a little older like 12 and you needed to contact him to see if he made it to the bus or off the bus sure, but nine it would be nothing more then showing off.
