I really don''t know. I have always wondered that.
Why personalize it, know what I mean. It is what it is.
People want to feel like they have some control over the situation, yet, still, the universe does not neccessarily respond to our desires.
It can make a person feel worse to look at things that way.
Maybe they are looking for what they feel is the root cause to avoid the repetition.

Generally, yes, but not always. But the 'people' you speak of and what they say shouldn't make a difference. When something bad happens to me, I am the one who usually goes over the recent events of my life to determine what it was I did that caused me grief.
