Most certainly yes.
People seem to like the sort of stories that feed their own prejudices and confirm their view of the world. That's why so many of these stories are about foreigners or other "weird" people.
It seems a vicious circle to me, and no way out, unless more people come to their senses and stop buying that crap.

I think they TRY to exaggerate crime and that they succeed in selling the notion that people live in fear.
Quite honestly, as one of "the people," in a very large city, I don't live in fear. Despite the crime. Death happens. You have a certain amount of self-preservation and natural instincts towards your own safety... and after that, you just take the risk of living life. I'll either die of old age, or in a plane crash, or I'll be struck down by a bus or a bullet or a tornado... or a rabid pig... Life is about living. And I think that most people take the morning news with their coffee then move into their day, leaving the morning news on the table under empty coffee mugs, junk mail, and other insignificant signs of life.

Yes I do. I am not sure where you are from, but I have lived in some major cities in the US and while not pulling rose colored glasses over the lot - the situation is not as awful as it seems. If things were so horrible - why would people flock to these cities to live there?
Did you ever see Michael Moore's film "Bowling for Columbine"? One of it's major themes is the use of fear to control and manipulate the population. And that was before September 11th - it has just escalated since then.
"Fear is that little darkroom where negatives are developed."... Michael Pritchard.

The media is going to report what produces the highest ratings.
Look at Iraq. Most people are not even aware that Iraq is a democracy and has had an elected parlement for almost a year. Instead you get the 'explosion of the day' because that sells better.

I don't live in fear.
Most criminal activity never makes it into the media, only the big, gory stories are reported. So no, I don't think the media is exaggerating crime.

The media focuses on negativity. Especially TV.
Imagine if the newscaster said " Nothing bad happened today. Everything is fine! Everybody is happy!"
Nobody would watch the news.
But if somebody gets killed or hurt and there are ambulances and flashing red lights, you pay attention, which is what they want.
