I agree with you, mate, but it looks like we're on a loser here. Some of the answers make a distinction 'legal' & 'illegal',but if they see an obvious foreigner in the street, they don't ask themselves that question, they think 'bloody immigrant'.A little bit of racism here, don't you think?

Fair question, but there's a massive difference between the people coming to this country to work in skills deficit areas and those who are just coming to take advantage of the NHS and benefits.
I think it's a shame there are so few midwifery and nursing places available because these jobs are being fulfilled by overseas workers. Same with doctors who are British born and educated but cannot find work.
Yes it's great if all immigrants want to work and are providing a temporary service to get us over a skills deficit because there are people being trained to do these things who cannot fulfil the posts in the meantime. But honestly, is it right to hand over all over skilled posts permanently to immigrants, thus reducing the jobs open to our own children in the future? This aspect is simply laziness on the part of the government.
I think the media is a lot to blame for stirring up public opinion by scare-mongering.
What we all should remember is that not all immigrants are terrorists, there are British born and immigrants who are workshy, and it would be more helpful if the gorvernment were to lay down exactly where the skills deficits are, what plans there are to train to fill these areas and who is going to be employed in these posts in the meantime.

I agree with most of the answers given really. Apart from the misinformed one about the nationality of the 7/7 bombers.
My problem is not with legal immigration to fill skills shortages but with illegal immigration of people who then become a burden to the tax payer by claiming benefits they shouldn't even be allowed to get but are and see Britain as an easy ride.
A lot of Polish people have moved into my town. They're a great bunch and I'm happy to have them here. They know how to drink and are a good laugh as well as being very hard workers when at work.
But we also have a load of Albanians who spend all day sitting around begging and are also handed their money by the state which is basically my taxes and the taxes paid by the legal immigrants like a lot of the Poles. They do bugger all and get housing and are 100% illegal immigrants who we can't chuck out because of some stupid law made in Brussells by the French who send them to us by the truckload to get them out of their country....
So you tell me that's acceptable and my view is a fascist one....
Idiot.

There are no skills shortages in this country, this is pure left wing propaganda.
The monetarian system that governs the british economy means that skill shortages and surplus are controlled by the nature of supply and demand.
In essence, if there are not enough ppl to fill particular work, then the demand for that skill increases and therefore the pay. With increase pay the applicants and training for that vacancy increases.
EG. shortage of LGV drivers in transport industry has seen wages increase by 25%, and directly , an increase of lgv training candidates of 25%.
It is true that each productive employee contributes to the economy, but only insofar as to saturation levels of the population.
Also , we must understand , that for the economy to stand an individuals pension, the worker must pay a proportional amount in income tax to support his pension, that mean working from the age of 16 or paying a high income tax from a high paying job.
Well , it is highly unusual for immigrants to arrive at 16 and gain permanent employment or have a high paying job that would pay enopugh tax to support his pension and indeed his/her drains on the infrastructure.
The country is already well beyond saturation levels , generally speaking most immigrants are not contributing to the required level and therefore are a burden.
They essentially are delaying a pensions crisis through short term measure, immigrants get old too , then who will carry the burden?
Immigration levels have been engineered by the blair government as a short term measure to economic difficulties that will enhance blairs standing during his time in office.
but economic problems have been compounded by this short sighted and reckless behaviour and as a result our children will inherit an economically and cultutally bankrupt country.
...thanks tony!

Oh, yes, all those highly skilled immigrants who fill the skills gap. Like the statistics today on the 500,000 plus eastern Europeans who've arrived since EU enlargement, filling such highly skilled jobs as 'factory worker' (37%), 'warehouse' (10%) and 'cleaner', 'packer' and 'caterer' (9% each) as listed in official Home Office statistics today (link below)
Not to mention failing to provide sufficient public services for half a million extra people, when our infrastructure was already crumbling before the latest wave of arrivals.
Or the fact that such an absurdly open door immigration policy simply sucks the best people out of the nations who need them most: do you think that Africa is so awash with doctors that they can export them? Not to mention that the UK is training increasing numbers of doctors and nurses at home, but guess what? Most of the domestically trained nurses can't find jobs, because we've filled them all with immigrants because we can pay them less, thus not only depriving their home nations of their talents, but ensuring the unemployment queues in the UK continue to increase.
Perhaps you might want to find out what you're talking about. You sound like the government, but of course, that's why we're not importing huge amounts of lawyers and accountants; then their wages would decrease too.

I agree with you in the fact that there are alot of well educated people from other countries benefiting our country. However, I do believe they are legal. Do you think an illegal immigrant who takes a job from an American for half the wage is benefiting our country? I think not. It is not a matter of them taking our jobs, I am talking about people who are here legally. More power to them. It is those who are here illegal. They are costing our government billions of dollars. And most of them are uneducated and yes, whether you want to call it "Right Wing" opinions, alot of them are sexual predators, drug users, and so forth. I have lived in California, and therefore know first hand. I suggest that you get all your facts together before you start rambling on. Just out of curiousity I would love to find out what your occupation is?

I don't think people have any problem with LEGAL immigrants I am a immigrant myself I had to go back to my country and wait for my visa. The reason why people are upset is that when you do something illegal you are thumbing your nose at the laws of that nation. Remember the time you were waiting in line for hours and as soon as the door open someone cuts in front of you, well that's how legal immigrants feel.

It's not the skilled workers that are the problem. It's the rest of them. I used to work in a supermarket and once served three men (don't know where from, I couldn't make out the accent) with a £200 stereo. They pulled out a wad of government vouchers that I thought was for grocery shopping. I counted out the right amount and they still had the equivalent to put back in their pocket. After I've paid my rent and bills I have £30 for shopping for me and two kids. I don't get that sort of help. Why should they??
