The Catholic Church is not a "Branch" of Christianity, it is the Trunk of Christianity that all of the others branched off from.

I believe that the eastern orthodox is very close in it's beliefs to the Roman Catholic Church, but honestly am not sure.

At one time there was one Church. Then in 1054 the East and West had a big fight and the West broke away. They say, of course, that the East broke away. The Church in the East became the Orthodox, which means right belief and right worship. The Church in the West called itself Catholic, meaning Universal.

There are different Churches in the East, such as the Russia Orthodox and the Greek, and a few smaller ones.

In the West the "Catholic" church is correctly called the Roman Catholic church, because they are not the only Catholic church, they just think that they are. And within the Roman Church there is a small branch that is much like the one in the East, they are the Eastern Rite Roman Catholics.

Catholicism is not a "branch" of Christianity. Catholicism IS Christianity, full and complete, as founded by Jesus Christ, and as lived by every Christian on earth for 1,000 years after Christ. During those 1,000 years, "Catholic" and "Christian" were simply synonyms. The Orthodox are a church which separated from the Catholic Church in the 11th Century, which teach basically the same doctrinal truths as the Catholic Church, but are not under the headship of the Vicar of Christ, the Pope. All other Christian churches are recent manmade institutions founded on unbiblical principles, and teaching partial truth. Jesus Christ never intended any Christian church to exist but the one He personally founded for all mankind, the Catholic Church.

I am not sure I understand your question, but I will try to answer...
The Roman Catholic church is the "trunk" of the tree of Christianity. It was the original Christian church. The great schism occurred to create the Eastern Orthodox church during the middle ages when the capital of the Holy Roman Empire moved from Rome to Constantinople/Byzantium.

Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics separated from one another in 1054.

There are very few theological differences. The main difference is that the Eastern Orthodox Churches (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11329a.htm) use the Byzantine Rite (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04312d.htm) and the Roman Catholic Church use the Roman or Latin Rite.

Pope John Paul II said of the Eastern Orthodox Churches in Orientale Lumen, "A particularly close link already binds us. We have almost everything in common." (see http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/apost_letters/documents/hf_jp-ii_apl_02051995_orientale-lumen_en.html)

With love in Christ.

Originally there was one Catholic church.
At some point, the bishop of Rome was declared potentate of the whole enchilada.
The eastern section of the church refused to recognize that and broke away.
That's why today, we have the ROMAN Catholic church and the Orthodox church.
Orthodox ....mneaning the real, true church.

The Catholic Church as it is known today stems from the apostles of Jesus. The position of Apostle was passed down by selection among the brethren (as they picked Judas's successor). We know them today as bishops.

The Orthodox are almost identical, but with minor differences in belief. We hope one day to be reunited with all Christians in one Church, but the Orthodox are the nearest in belief to Catholic.
