My mom said we're possibly getting another cat from this neighbor who has a baby and can't find a home for her cat. Will my 5 yr. old & 1 yr. old cat adjust OK ?

Dustball, the 5 yr. old, really gets along with the other cat, Sparky.

Depending on the personality of your cats and the new one. I had to go through with it and at first, the 2 kittens didn't like each other, but then they warmed up and now they're best friends! It just takes time and patience.

Good luck with your cats!

Probably it will be fine.
I have a fourteen year old cat and last christmas got two new ferral kittens. Hevan knows she doesn't LIKE the cats (well she only really doesn't like Yinyang but Ginger protects her from the bully cat, Yinyang, he's a little coward) but that's because she's old
you should try putting the cat somewhere in a room and keep it there the first few days to a week. rub a towel on the new cat and let the other cats smell it, to get used to his or her sent. do the same with the old cats to the new ones. Later on open the door a little bit (just a crack) and let them meet. it may not go well the first time (or two...or three...) but don't give up it will take a while. also make sure to give your old cats just as much attention, if they have a chair they like to sit in and the new cat takes the chair, put the cat down off the chair. Don't let the older cats think the new cat is "taking over".
Don't try to get them to eat together right after you let the cat out of the room.
Best of Luck!!

It is always interesting to see a NEW cat being introduced into the household where another cat or cats exist.. ... I have to stand back and watch ... it is sort of like that feeling of what are you doing here.. Who do you think you are(as the existing cats talk to the new kitty)... IN about a week or less.. the newness wears off and all would be normal again.. To hasten that along, I will use a brush and brush the hair of the new kitty and the same brush to brush the existing kitties so the smell is transferred from one to the other

They will hate the newbie for a while then they may get use to each other. Have the 5 year old cat cat get use to the smell. When it is use to the smell then bring the kitty over. Don't let them get to close at first.

If the only on the pound is a kitten it many times is going extra user-friendly whilst introducing a youthful one into the enjoyed ones. purely confirm this is a minimum of 8-10 weeks previous. If the two person it may desire to take quite a few weeks of spitting and hissing however the choose adapt with staying power. in the event that they get too undesirable somewhat spray with a squirt bottle will calm the down. I surely have accomplished this somewhat some circumstances and with staying power it is going to likely be accomplished with infrequently and problems.

UG...it was a nightmare for me for the first 6 weeks. They didn't get along AT ALL. There was fighting, crying, separation. I had to keep them apart for weeks, and when I wasn't at home. Very difficult for me emotionally.

BUT...the good news is, it will end and they will get along. Now, they look out for each other....they don't sleep together, but they definitely play together and keep an eye out for each other. Very cool So, if you have the patience and emotional fortitude, I say it's soooo worth it to get another cat. But it won't be easy.

It depends on the gender of your cats. If you have females and get a male, well most people knows how that goes...... If you have a male and female now and you get another male there will be cat fights. But if they are all spayed or nuetered things may go alright.

I really have no answer till you try it. Some get along, others don't, like people. My boy cat loved my other boy cat. But he died, and now this one fights with every cat that comes by.

They might not like each other for the first week, because they might get mad that another cat is in their house, then they adjust just fine, they wil eat together, and play together (only if they are playful,) and they will always hang out together, but if you keep them together.

Trust me your cats will not be very happy with you, and don't be surprised if they growl and hiss.

But don't worry ! They will forgive you and adjust to there new roommate. It just takes time. In time they will learn that this new cat is here to stay and will grow to tolerate him. Perhaps even become friends ?
