None! God doesn't need your money. Want to donate something? Donate blood, give old clothes to the salvation army, donate your time to a shelter or program like Big Brothers/Big Sisters...you will make a much more positive impact than throwing your money into a plate to cover the church's light bill.

Malachi 3:10 tells us to "bring the whole tithe into the storehouse". Tithe means, literally, "tenth". This is one of the origins of why Christians give 10%, as it is their "tithe" to their local church. Amounts given above this are called an "offering".
I always personally encourage folks to just give what they can give. Another Scripture that really speaks loudly on this is 2 Corinthians 9:7, which says that "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

Tithes were an Old Testament custom. The tribe of Levi were the priests of Israel and would only work in the temple and such, and since they did not work in the fields to provide for themselves, the rest of the tribes were to give 10% of their income to the Levites. Just give whatever you feel lead to give, but remember that God wants your heart (symbolically speaking) and since he doesn't get a share of that collection plate, its more like you are paying your minister's salary and any maintenance for the church building. If they have had holes in the floor for a decade while the minister is driving a brand new Hummer, then maybe you can pass along the collection plate without giving. Use your heart and your head and give whatever you desire to give.

Abraham gave God a tithe - or 10 per cent - of all of the spoils of all the great kings he slaughtered in defending his nephew, Lot. His grandson, Jacob, also promised a tenth of all of his increase after God blessed him with increase. The tithe was later incorporated into the covenant of the Law given to Moses.
It was one of God's last complaints before His 400-year period of silence until the birth of Christ the Savior - that the people were robbing the house of God of the tithes and offerings (Malachi 3:8-12).
Now, in the new covenant, the only thing that has been said about how much to give is to give according as we have purposed in our hearts. We're not limited to just 10%. We can give it all to the house of God and work of God if we so choose! :)

That's about right but it also depends on the person giving and how strong their faith is. I used to hold onto my money because I was extremely poor and didn't have faith in God to provide for me. I have grown so much spiritually that even now if I only have $2.00 left to my name for two weeks, I will give it to my church...and God has always found a way to feed my family and keep a roof over our heads. We're not in control of our lives, God is.

That is an individual choice and should never be forced by the passing of the plate. A church only needs a simple donation bix in the back.

Tithing, according to the bible, is a tenth of all you earn. Back in the days of the bible, in a trade society, this was livestock and grain, and it was given to priests who had taken a vow of poverty, so that they could eat and live without taking a job and therefore gain monetary wealth.
There is much more that you can tithe. What is the most valuable asset to all mankind? Time.
Use that time to help someone else or your church and you will have tithed the greatest prize of all.

Jesus is our High Priest after the order of Melchizedek. Melchizedek was the High King & Priest of Peace (Shalom) who Father Abraham tithed the 10th.
Jesus is our High Priest since He shed His own blood for the remission of our sins.
Father Abraham gave a 10th of his increase to this High Priest & King of Shalom. So, we should give a 10th of our personal increase to the House of the Lord Jesus Christ, Our High Priest & King of Shalom. That would be the church of Jesus Christ that you are being fed the bread of life & living water.

I give 10% out of a sense of justice. If we truly believe that we are here to serve God, and that the Church is doing his works, then what else matters? If I have food, clothing and shelter, do I need the plasma screen TV?
