X-rays only show hard tissue images. Gums are soft tissue and unless there is massive calculous build up, it doesn't show disease.

It will show bone recession caused by periodontal disease, however.

Yes, I had periodontal disease and it wasn't discovered by x-rays. It was quite evident by the condition and looks of the gums when he examine me. He prescribed medication and it cleared up after a while.
