My son will be 4 next month and has been in gymnastics since he was 18 months old. He loves it to this day and it has been a wonderful energy outlet for him.
We started in mommy and me class where I sat with him and helped him wait his turn and helped him on the equipment during free-time. Now he goes in the big gym by humself and is quite the little monkey! We talked about taking him out and putting him in something else now that he is older but he is adament that he does not want to quit.
18 months it is not developmentally appropriate to be trying to teach ABC's and 123's in a formal setting. I personally feel that a parent involved class such as gymnastic, swimming, or music is very rewarding for both the child and parent and is a wonderful bonding activity. It also teaches the child to wait their turn (age appropriate amount of time) and how to follow directions.

A "hyperactive" child will probably enjoy gym a lot more than painting. And after getting their "hyperactivity" out they may be better behaved.
Whether they like or enjoy any class is more about the teacher and the other kids.
And a for the "too cold" that is up for the mom to decide. I intend to still go to the park almost everyday during the winter with my 8 month old and I live in Canada.. so it gets cold. If I am forced to hibernate I will go insane.

It's best to start being active at a young age. Too many kids these days dont get enough activity. ABC class at 18 months??? What exactly would be the point?

If he is hyperactive, then a physical outlet like gym class would be GOOD for him. He can learn to focus that energy and learn when and where it is appropriate to use that energy. He may not be ready to sit still for "educational stuff" yet. Putting him in that kind of class might not play to what his interests are at this age and could be disruptive to the other children.

it may grow up to hate gym or it could help it in becoming a very active young child and have a love for being active which would help the child out a lot since we as american are struggling with weight issues as it is. if you make a small excercise program fun for your child, it should be fine

If the child seems to enjoy it, why not? ABCs and 123s will come soon enough.

No if she has fun, she will like it. I liked gym, and I lost alot of weight apprently what my mom says. When I was young I was really cubby, she said I had fun and I enjoyed it. And i lost alot of energy so I wasnt bugging her all day. I was a hyper child even at 19 months.

Maybe she could try to keep her daughter warm, but if the child is active thatn she won't be cold. I think it is a good idea to get the kids active so we don't have obese kids.
