The metaphor of humans being sheep is interesting to examine.
The relationship is the shepard robs the sheep of their coats and eats their flesh - he doesn't do it for loving concern of the animal. And to find comfort in a rod and staff = you're "comforted" by these instruments of control (THWACK!). I guess in a bdsm way it's "comforting"

A shepherd carries both a "rod" and a "staff"...
A "rod" would be more like a club...to beat off predators that would feast on the sheep.
The "staff" is that stick with the little crook on the top...it is to pull the sheep out of danger.
Yes, I find great comfort in knowing that He is armed against enemies, and that He is prepared to pull me out of any trouble I might stumble into.

His rod of correction comforts me cause it shows me he loves me. When I do wrong its his rod that corrects me. His staff leads me back into the fold. I am his sheep and a Good Shepherd always uses a rod and staff. I am glad I am saved.
