I got a thumbs down for expressing sympathy, asking someone to email me and giving them a suicide hotline number. I get thumbs down because I am an atheist and some people know it. So no matter the answer, you get a thumbs down.

One of 2 reasons. Either someone dislikes you, or they dislike the fact that you are an atheist. All of my answers are immediately thumbs downed. Someone takes issue with me. That's fine, it means that in some small way I have made them look inside themselves and they are uncomfortable with what they are seeing.
My guess is that you are accomplishing this same thing, whether that was your intent or not. Accept the thumbs down as a testament that you are doing something right. That's how I view every single one I receive.

I think people are grumpy alot lately, I have even gotten thumbs down in the food section questions and it happened to be the same answer as everybody else. I also think that people remember maybe an answer that I have given that they didn't like so no matter what my answer might be they are going to give a thumbs down. Don't let them get to you.

I would guess it's because people see your "name" and judge you by this alone, and don't go any deeper.
Superficial - (that's the word I was looking for.) People are superficial, and stupid. (stupid and superficial?)
Anyway the few that investigate you will be surprised how wrong they are about you, and not thumbs down you so, I'm sure.
Or else they are scared of smart people?

I've noticed that with Atheists and Pagans alike. I think it's just because we aren't part of "their" crowd. I guess they think only those who are in their religion can have a legitimate answer... which is sad. They show they can't think outside of the box they have created for themselves.

Do not worry my dear.
Thumbs down are the most certain way to KNOW WITHOUT A DOUBT that what you are saying strikes a nerve with Christians, and is most likely 100% accurate. This is how they deal with it - by giving you a thumbs down.
Personally, I relish them. They let me know Im really getting to them.
