you don't apply for medals, they are awarded to you for services rendered. The NDSM is currently authorized for all personnel who enlisted aftre 11 September 2001.

Generally your unit puts you in for it.

you don't. it's given to you by your unit. if you enlisted during a time of war, which i imagine you did, you should get it.
