One would assume it's a form of control. The whole arguement against sex before marriage is obviously to ensure that there is some form of control over the population without the risk of people turning away from the faith. Likewise the rules governing contraception in some religions are a way of ensuring the expansion of their particular religious doctrines. I think you'll find most religious organisations have fairly stringent views on relationships, and the more organised the religion, the more expansive and strict the rules.

There are only a few rules and they are quite simple. Marriage is for life. Sex is permissible between married couples for the purposes of making babies. Anything else is sinful.
What makes life complicated are the many different types of relationship and the concept of sex being a form of entertainment.

Because they were written by men to control women (as chattels) and to ensure, that when land was the most important asset in a village and relationships were between a limited number of people living is such close proximity to each other, that, a)killing each other because of adultery was reduced and b) to ensure that your family ended up getting as much land as was possible to maintain to feed your family.

Don't think of them as rules, rather as guidlines put there so that we will not hurt one another. It is not easy to keep a 'rule' but there is wisdom to why we should try and abide by these guidlines. Multiple relationships do not solve anything. They can bring heartache and as one can see disease.
