The financial aid office of the college [even if it is one you are not applying to] has a listing of expected expenses. You are encouraged to use those numbers.

Some may be higher than you expect, some may be lower. But, from experience, the numbers are usually pretty good and the nice thing about them is that the financial aid people will accept them.

Answer honestly, but make sure the board knows you need it. I wrote one a little bit ago. I think I put something like "Although, my family and I believe that education is the most important pursuit in life we are unable to pay for any of the cost incurred during college. Thus, I require as much financial assistance as is available."
