Hi, my name is George Trinh. When I tried to open an e-mail account in Microsoft Outlook, Outlook asked me to fill in some infomation concerning POP3, IMAP, and SMTP. Would anyone out there please kindly explain to me what those three words mean; and what information I should fill in in order to be able to create an Outlook e-mail account correctly ? Thanks a million in advance !

SMTP
(Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is used for transportation of email from one host to another. The protocol was designed with openess in mind such that there is no security in verifying the sender. It also avoids traffic by allowing multiple receipients with only one copy of the data being sent from one host to another.
POP3
(Post Office Protocol 3) is the protocol that allows email retrieval and deletion/undelete.
IMAP
(Interner Message Access Protocol, version 4rev1) is another protocol that handles email retrieval, but with increased manipulation capability. IMAP allows the manipulation of remote messages mailboxes, very much as if these mailboxes were accessed locally. IMAP's functionality includes creation, deletion, and the renaming of mailboxes, and the checking and setting of email messages statuses (FLAGS). The messages themselves can be partially retrieved and searched given various parameters.

If you have a free Yahoo account, you can't access it with Outlook.

You need to ask this things to your Email Provider. They would have the information that you need to setup an email with outlook.

POP3=Receive Mail Server name.

IE. pop.mail.yahoo.com

IMAP=Don't have to worry about this. It can be ignored.

SMTP=Send Mail Server name.

IE. smtp.mail.yahoo.com

Both POP3 & SMTP server names are usually provided by your ISP.
