After you complete your Initial Entry Training, all service members are awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

Later, if you have maintain standards of good conduct during your tour of duty, you are awarded the Good Conduct Medal as well.

All the rest are based on some type of meritorious service or valor.

No, not in the UK forces. It is highly unlikely nowadays however that you can serve minimum term ( 3 years ) and not end up a conflict or war zone.

I know people who have served 8 years and have never been anywhere including Northern Ireland so never earned a General Service medal either.

In the British Army - NO. Medals for British soldiers are awarded for combat and valour (valor). When a soldier is sent into a theatre of operation (war zone) he receives a combat medal for that theatre provided he remains in the zone for a minimum (I think) of 24 hours.

Medals of valour (valor) are awarded to soldiers who perform acts of considerable bravery and courage on the field of battle in sight of the enemy.

The highest UK bravery award for the military is the VC - Victoria Cross.

The Highest UK bravery award for civilians is the GC -
George Cross.

The Island of Malta holds the George Cross for civilian valour in the face of the enemy when the Nazi Luftwaffe attacked the island for about three months - hundreds were killed and injured but they would not give in to the Nazi.

The Island of Malta is therefore correctly addressed as : -
MALTA GC if you send a letter or card to someone there, always remember the GC. Its just a matter of simple pride in the people of Malta and their island.

You even get medals for non or very little service.Just look at the Royal Family on Armistice Day and other important occasions. How they walk straight with all them medals beats me.Are they all plastic imitations to save on weight? If not the strain on their backs must be enormous.

In the US Army you get the "rainbow" ribbon for completing basic training. Once you complete a six-month tour overseas you will get the overseas service ribbon. Eventually you will qualify for the National Defense ribbon as we are engaged in the war on terror.
