Is it okay to give my cat baby food? I've heard of it before. She has cancer, and I'm trying to keep her comfortable-hard for her to eat some of the soft cat food.

She is hungry and tries to eat, but it's hard for her to chew-she's not in pain because she runs around and plays with her string. I'll know when it's time-the vet said she is okay as long as I keep her comfy until her time does come.

You can give your cat human baby food. I think you have to get the stage one Gerber's to get chicken, turkey or lamb without ANY onion or garlic powder.

It is cooked and does not contain taurine which your cat needs if you are feeding long-term. Your vet has a canned food called a/d which is very high in nutrition and contains the necessary taurine. It is very soft and palatable like the baby food and is even used to syringe feed ailing cats.

Sorry to hear of her cancer. I know that's very hard to deal with and I hope the a/d or baby food will help her feel better.

You must not give a cat or kitten human baby food that contains ANY onion or garlic. So check that out for sure. Those can cause serious health problems. The baby food meat is OK. It does not contain any taurine and that is an essential amino acid that cats must have from their food (dogs and people can make taurine in their bodies from their food - cats can't. So if a small amount is an enticement to healthy cat food it's OK. Just don't overdo it.

Baby food should be ok to give your cat.

Sick kittens in the shelter I volunteer at get meat baby food because it's easier for them to eat and easy on their digestive system.

When in doubt, call your vet. We're not experts on here, but they are.

Good luck...sorry about your cat.

Yes, it's OK to give meat baby food to your cat. Just make sure you get a food that doesn't include onion powder--onions are toxic to cats, and you don't want to complicate your senior kitty's problems. Make sure to monitor her quality of life (as you're already doing), and appetite is a big indicator of how good a cat feels. If she won't eat baby food, try mixing her cat food into a fine paste in a blender (add a little water first) or add tuna juice to either cat food or baby food. Sometimes making food smell stronger can stimulate them to eat.

Double check with your vet; baby food probably doesn't have the nutritients your cat needs. Even though she has cancer, she still needs proper nutrition.
I'm very sorry your cat has cancer. Please pay attention when she tells you she's ready to go; I've always put myself on a guilt trip whenever I had to have a pet euthanized, thinking that maybe I made the dog or cat wait too long.
Good luck. Keep in mind that you're trying to do everything right for her. Be strong.

Baby food's ok, when i got my ferral kitties (a handful but i love them) they were sick and needed meds and i asked the vet what to feed them they said baby food was ok
my cats only ate the chicken flavor though they're finky little eaters for ferral cats -.-
Best of Luck to you and your kitty
Oh also some cats don't go for that so make kitten food
put in cooked hotdogs and boiled chicken all mushed up with some shredded carrot is what my kittens liked

You can give her baby food or you may even want to try making "kitten glop". This past summer i had to raise a kitten from 2 days old and found out that it is basically kitten "formula" It is nutritious for them and you may have better results with it than with baby food. Here is a link for some recipes. It's worth a try, at the very least and you never know, your cat may love it. i am very sorry to hear about your cat and hope this helps

I looked up more or less "forbidden foods for cats" the other day, and knew I'd come across something about baby food...

http://www.felinecrf.org/persuading_cat_to_eat.htm#baby_food

"Please ensure you purchase a food without any onion or garlic or onion powder (see Which Foods to Feed) - Gerber meat and Beechnut baby foods in the USA are apparently safe, but formulations can change, so do check the labels.
Do not feed baby foods long-term, because like other human foods they lack taurine..."

Most, but not all, kitten food in tins (nix the pouches) is soft mush; perhaps you could supplement with that? Or you could mix in a taurine supplement for cats, I suppose; ask your vet if it's necessary.

Sorry about your kitty.

Baby food is a great way to help a sick animal get the nutrition it needs. Most vets would agree.
