More people have wrecks when they are on the cellphone. But, some high schoolers have U.I.L. and other events where their parents do not go with them, and they can be gone for days. What do you think about this??

Old enough to hold a steady job and pay the cellphone bill on time and more importantly old enough to be responsible for the loss or damage of a cellphone.

it depends on a lot of things: reason for getting phone (security and contact w/ parents or mainly to chat w/ friends), maturity level (able to keep up w/ phone, able to keep w/n plan minutes); my daughter had her own phone at age 11 (now 19) and has never gone over plan minutes, has kept up with phone and kept it in working order ( I did break down and get her a new one last year!); I got it for security reasons (stalker and changing locations of after school practice sites at the last minute);
