I have not registered it in my name, and I am moving from California to Texas in a week. does anybody know what I have to do? Can I just go to the DMV with the person im giving it to and put it in her name instead of mine? This car was a gift from my grandparents if that makes any difference.

I have not registered it in my name, and I am moving from California to Texas in a week. does anybody know what I have to do? Can I just go to the DMV with the person im giving it to and put it in her name instead of mine? This car was a gift from my grandparents if that makes any difference.
Also, Im not being ungrateful to my grandparents with this as being presumed. I have told them my plans and they think ts a good thing for me to do. Especially since im moving and it would be more expensive to tow or ship the car to Texas, not to mention registering it as a Texas car. My friend needs a car badly, she is having a tough time right now and I know a reliable car will help her get to work and being pregnant and ditched by an A**hole she needs all the help she can get. Thank you for your help everybody.

if it was registered in your name you could but since i'm not sure who it's registered to i don't really know. if it's registered to your grandparents you would have to talk to them. either way if you do end up giving it to your friend just go to the dmv to switch the title and make sure that when they ask how much your friend paid for the car that they put gift. it really helps alot on the insurance. you seem like a really nice person for wanting to give a needy friend a car.
good luck and god bless.

It all depends on the state. Whoever's name the title is registered in would have to sign the car over to your friend. That has to be mailed to the state capital for approval and a new title. The friend can then get the car's registration in their name. You should be able to get the forms from the dmv to submit.

Did your grandparents sign over the title to you? If so, you own the car and would need to apply for a new title and/or registration.
If not, you can't just 'give the car away'.
If you do own it, here's a site with instructions on what to do. Your best bet is to go to the DMV, with your friend.

As long as the Title to the car is in your name you can just take your friend to the DMV & switch the title over. Then its their responsibility to get it registered.

You cant just give it to a stranger because while your grandparents name is on the car, if they wreck it with no insurance or hold up a bank or other crime - your grandparents would be held accountible.
Whatever you do - make darn sure your grandparents names are not left on it.

either you have to have a letter of gift from your grandparents in your friend`s name, or register it in your name, and then give a letter of gift to your friend to register later in his/ her name. You can get the letter of gift from County registration office.

Yeah, you probably can take your friend with and do whatever you'd like to do. I bet your grandparents will do something nice for you again after you do.

Yes, you can give the car to your friend. Everything you need to know/do can be found on this page: http://www.dmv.org/ca-california/title-transfers.php.
