Me and my husband have had our bull terrier for 2 years now. she gets yeast ear infection all the time. Our vet gave us anti-biotics and we switched her diet to eating only fresh food we made with no perseratives. our vet also switch her heart wom because that too had artificial flavor. It was good for a couple of months but now her ear infections back. I can't keep going to the vet every three months like this and paying hundreds of dollars. Has anyone else had this happen? If so what did you do?

Um, Jake, a bull terrier's ears are already up......

Recurring ear infections are usually a sign of allergies. It's good that you've switched her to a natural diet, but it's still possible that she's allergic to one or more of the ingredients, particularly if you are feeding grains. Yeast infections can also be fed by fermented/yeasty foods like cheese, vinegar, nuts etc. Try experimenting with her diet to see if changing it affects her ears at all. Or she may be allergic to something in her environment.

As for clearing up the ear infections, I've had good luck with a mix called Blue Power Ear Treatment. Do a google search on that name and you will get a fair number of hits. It's relatively inexpensive to make.

I know this is going to sound a little weird, but it works. If possible, pin your dogs ears up for at least an hour a day. This allows air and light to get into the ear. Yeast doesn't do well with either. Also, you can buy yeast cream (Canesten,Monistat) from the drug store, put a small amt. into the ear and massage ear to spread cream around. Alot cheaper than drugs.

If your dog is getting yeast infections it is really important to make sure that it is not getting any yeast in her diet. i.e no bread or grapes. Yoghurt can cause all sorts of digestive troubles in dogs, so if you want to add live bacteria I suggest that you get a preparation from your vet. I presume that you are cleaning the ears regularly too - you can get ear-drops in the pet store that can be used daily.

I've read somewhere that acidophilus (found in yogurt) is good against yeast type infections (for humans I am not sure about dogs). Google it . . . :o)
