I love how some people spew out answers like they are fact. There really is only one way to know for certain, and I personally can wait to find out the answer to that one. Any day above ground is a good day, right? ;)

Dead people are dead. They're not in heaven. The condition of the dead is made clear at Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10, where we read: "The dead know nothing . . . There is no pursuit, no plan, no knowledge or intelligence, within the grave." (Moffatt)

The soul and spirit are in a place. The physical body sleeps (is dead). The body will be made new, so it will be reunited with the soul and spirit, and then spend eternity in Heaven or Hell.

This is written to we who believe and are saved in Jesus Christ-
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
The Coming of the Lord
13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words.

Those who died before Christ were sleeping. Christ had not come yet to save us. With the death and resurrection of Christ the dead/sleeping that were followers of God were taken to heaven.
