I have been a police officer for 10 years, and pretty much done every job there is in it....... if you truly want an answer to your question, ask yourself how much money it would take for you to be shot at to protect someone that you don't know. Thing is, most of use don't really do it for the money. It would sure be nice to not qualify for food stamps though.

Like or dislike the police it is not a job that anyone can do.They should be paid more money, having to face aggression, distrust and placing yourself in those situations every day deserves a decent pay packet.
They could always make the money with "baby sitting" fees, charging for the return of unruly teenagers who are drunk and abusive, something they do regularly to ensure that persons safety. If they didn't have to take care of incapably drunk or drugged people they could spend their time concentrating on real criminals, drink and drugs are fine if they are used in moderation but being so shitfaced that you don't know what you are doing is just stupid.Crime prevention shouldn't include babysitting.

Police are Civil Servants. They keep us safe just light fire-fighters. They should make more money but if it is not in the Cities budget they will never get it. If the city makes more money from tickets, taxes, or a bigger budget allocation, then they can get a raise.

These men and women put their lives on the line everytime they get in their car so dont you think they should make more than teachers, housekeepers, and cooks. Even construction workers and road crews get more. A flagger gets $30-$50 per hour. What is wrong with our system?

To be perfectly honest I haven't seen the Police actually do anything around here. We have Community Officers but I rarely see them either. I think they are there just for a Public Relations exercise. I really feel that there should be more man power instead of wage increases.

It depends. Its not a blanket statement.

Many large metropolitan agencies have higher standards for hiring as well as high work loads and therefore pay more. Small agencies have lower standards and less work for them to do so they pay less.

I work in a department that has 1,000 sworn officers. We are the second highest paid agency in the state. But, we used to have the second highest crime rate in the nation, per ca-pita of population. We have reduced the crime rate about 50 % in the last 5 years.

being in the police force is a dangerous job and i do think they should be paid more for what they do and i know some people think why should they when they cant keep the crime rates down but u cant blame them its the government who make the laws they have to do as they are told.i also think nurses and the fire service should be paid more they risk their lives day in day out for us. I think the wages scheme in this country is all wrong

Yes I do! If they don't want to give them more money I'd like to see them take the money they'd be giving them go to giving them partners. These days our society has gotten so violent and crazy I hate to see them on patrol alone. In your smaller communities it might not always be as much a priority but out on the highways and larger cities.

Why would you think that they need more money? If there is evidence that they are not staying in the force because of poor pay, then do show the evidence, for I've not seen it. I'm not at all convinced that clearing up crime is directly assisted by paying more money, either.

So they do do a worthwhile job. So do fire-fighters, and nurses, and teachers, and... In the end, you have to show a reason why what they are paid now is not adequate. Do you know of one?

I agree with you. The police in my city make as much or a little more than a postal worker! They risk their life on a daily bases they should get better pay!

For what they do, for for what they uphold, yes, they need a raise, and better benefits. I know that there are a few cops out there that do not deserve a raise, but for the high percentage of "good cops", yes they need (deserve) better pay and benefits. For the most part, its a thankless job. My hats off to law enforcement. Be safe out there.
