you are correct. you have a period, then you start to build up a lining to support a fertilized egg.. when the egg does not get fertilized and implant, you shed that lining, thus causing a period.

Ovulate first, period after. You are right about the egg not being fertilized. If it gets fertilized, then she is pregnant and she does not have a period.

I always thought the same as you, that the only reason we get a period is because the egg is not fertilized. I have also heard that not every woman ovulates every month but will get their period. Your period is caused by your uterus preparing itself for pregnancy, but because the egg doesnt get fertilized, your uterus sheds its walls in result of what is called your period. I hope that is helpful.

This is just like the chicken and the egg. You are both right since you are talking about a cycle that keeps going around and around!! Depending on where you jump in, one could be before or after the other. If you want to get technical, most books and web sites state that your cycle begins when your period begins, and therefore, according to that, you ovulate after your period. But as I said it is all a cycle, so you are both right!!

You have to ovulate first. That is why you get a period, because the egg wasn't fertilized so you have to get rid off them. When you get the period your body is disposing of them.

You ovulate then if the egg isn't fertilized you start your period since the uterine lining is no longer needed.

Well you get your period because you didn't get pregnant when you ovulated...
but it goes in a circle so I guess it goes both ways depending on where you start-
ovulation- period-ovulation- period

Wikipedia says that menstruation comes first, which is what I learned in school. But at the same time, it is possible for a girl to get pregnant before her first period--she may have had such a small period the first time that she didn't even know it and therefore she gets pregnant before even knowing that she can.
