I have asked exactly same question before, and there were about 40% saying yes, there may be WW III in near future, but the other %60 said it will not happen, I remember.
After my own study and pondering, I do not think there will be the WW III.
It is because as of today's world, structure of the capitalism-based economy is already well formed in those nations with the great military power. And furthermore, the human kind did have learned the lesson of the carnage after the WW I and WW II.
We also have the U.S. domination in the world; no one would dare to tackle us. Since the U.S. policy is "good" (like spreading democracy, human rights, aiding the impoverished nations) compared to the old European "greedy" dominations (colonizing the world, stealing the wealth of the weak nations, constantly fighting each other for taking the better colony, etc.), there will not be likey the ones who openly go against the U.S.
Some say China will provoke the war against the U.S. in the future, but I doubt it. It is because China and the U.S. is already in the strong ties of economy, and the Chinese themselves are rather interested in pursuing economic prosperity. They know it well that opening a war and unstabilize the world will not be good for the sake of thier own good.
But instead, I think that the same kind of small regional military conflicts that are happening right now in the world, will continue for a long time. But this is better than the major scale WW III.

Have you heard of the Yom Kippur war in 1973, Israel vs a coalition of Arab nations....Egypt, Syria and Jordan. That was worse than the current situation.....it didn't raise a blip on the world war scenario (not that it didn't have the potention as a spark)...just relegated to the heap of regional conflicts between rump states. When the strategic super powers square off into TWO camps, then come back and we'll talk World War.
Until then, just think regional conflicts, proxy wars, sabre rattling and brinksmanship.... After the next world war, we'll be back into the stone age and you won't have to worry whether a world war occurred or not. The next World War can only be nuclear, how could it not if the price for victory will be very high.

No
World War is war between major world powers
If we are fighting the members of the UN security council, THAT would be World War
USA
Russia
China
UK-France
The rest are regional players and the current crop of trouble makers are just that. A regional war would be very messy, but deaths would be regional, not apocalyptic, and not involve the mass mobilizations of our civilians as in the past.
Like it or not, all the major economies of the world are too integrated for any major power to find war a reasonable option with its fellows. North Americans own shares in Russian and EU and Chinese corporations, as they do ours.
That is why North Korea has been put in its place by China and Iran will be by France and Russia when the time comes. No one there wants to lose billions in investments should the US or Israel decide to bomb the Iranians.
Meanwhile, it is all a big game of chicken to see who wins the biggest concessions from who.
No one including the Russians and Chinese are going to stick their necks out for Iran & Company. If Israel or the USA does the worst case scenario and nukes Tehran, the Russians and French and Chinese will scream bloody murder, but they still won't go to war for a bunch of religious extremists.
Not now...not ever.

A number of people consider the Cold War as WWIII so that may have already come and gone. It is difficult to tell exactly what might create a third "hot" world war. The boondoggle in the Middle East could deteriorate into that. A couple of worldwide crop failures could force major powers to go to war for scarce food. Similarly, scarce resources might make nations think their only option is to attack a neighbor with an abundance of those resources. Finally, there are a couple of nations (China, in particular) that believe their destiny is to dominate a region and/or rule "lesser" peoples. They are working toward this goal right now and it may come down to a war to protect allied nations.

I doubt it. The world wars were fueled by misinformation and inproper diplomancy, along with terriotial issues. The U.N. was set up to prevent a world war from ever happaning again. The major countries, North America, Europe, Japan, China, would never attack eachother. Those are the only major powers big enough to cause a "world war". Sure there is trouble in the middle east and with north korea but they are far too weak. There has always been trouble in the middle east. There is not enough clout there to cause a world war, far from it.
