I have no idea what I'm supposed to get my new goddaughter. She is being baptised Catholic and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to buy her a cross, a rosary, or what. (Yes, I am Catholic too.)

The French tradition was very interesting to hear.

Is there some kind of Italian Catholic tradition to follow? This is one of those times I wish my Grandmother was alive to ask.

SILVER. It's an old tradition that has been in my family (French Catholic) for years. When my fourth brother was born his godmother gave to him on his baptism a huge hunk of SILVER! It wasn't just a silver coin but a huge hunk of melted silver. It's a neat thing that is quite tactile and fun to hold in your hands.
Myself I've given silver on occasions for others as well. For instance my nephew received a drawing from me in silver-point. I'm an artist and I drew a picture of three baby animals in sterling silver. He's in his late twenties now and it is considered as valuable as my brothers Huge Hunk Of Silver.
Whatever gift you give is good but from what I've learn-ed from my grandmother is that a gift of silver is traditional.
Congratulations on your new found position as a Godmother. It's a wonderful title to hold, and God bless you and the Baptism to come.

Good Baptism Gifts

A card with money is fine. Also, clothes are appropriate. (I know it doesn't seem like it, but it's o.k.)

I am a godmother to 3 of my nieces (all Catholic). When they were baptized, I bought them a small music box to put on their dressers. They are all grown now and still have their music boxes.

A cross for the wall is fine. There are many nice 'Precious Moments' figurines that are religious in nature. These are fine, too.

is she being named after a saint? get her a statue or picture of that saint.. or a crucifix is nice to put in her room... or a statue/picture of Mary... A Catholic woman should always immitate Mary and pray to her daily, she is a perfect role model for a woman... a Rosary is a good thing too.. they make children's Rosaries that are great, colorful, and have bigger beads.. also, the most important gift you can give her, is your prayers everyday..

Depending how old....

A small cross necklace..

A rosary is nice....but - if she's just a baby...maybe not so good.

Something special from you, engraved - with the date...

A children's Catholic Bible is nice....they have them at Autom...if you don't know Autom....you should. Great prices...

In your situation, you are giving her part of yourself.

You are promising to guide her and raise her to know God and Jesus Christ as her personal savior.

My suggestion is to read up your bible so that you will be able to tell her bible stories while she is still very young and as she gets older, you will be able to answer her questions about these stories.

If you still feel the need to give her something material, find a good quality bound book of childrens bible stories, then make sure you take the time to read them to her even while she is very young.

The traditional gift is a silver item, but I think the savings bond certificate that a previous answerer suggested is a good one...;

Give her cash, or a savings bond.

Save the religious gifts for her communion and confirmation.

A bible that she can keep until she grows older and gives it to her children. Buy a nice cover or case for it. :)
