We are looking into adopting a young dog. She is 8 - 10 months old and is crate trained. Is this house trained or what? If not can I use this to house train her, if so how?

Yes. Crate training was the method used in order to house train the puppy.

That means that the people would lock the puppy in the crate when they left the house. Most dogs won't do their business where they sleep so that taught the dog to 'hold it'.

Your dog should be house broken if advertised as crate trained. Though I would ask the owners/adoption center for details if you are still concerned (better safe than sorry).

No it is not the same thing.
Crate training is very handy if you travel with your dog or you want your dog to have it's own space. A crate is like your dogs own little spot, like a bedroom. Should never be a spot where you angrily put your dog.
Usually if a dog is crate trained the people took the time to house train, not always though. I have always crate trained my young dogs. We have two dogs now that we can not find a crate big enough for them....another one of our dogs if he wants to be alone he will go into his kennel. I have always told the kids not to make him come out for that is his spot. The pup we just got has not been introduced to her kennel yet.
A dog if at all possible will not go to the bathroom in there crate. This is backward thinking as far as house training goes. I bet this pooch is already house trained :0)

It really only means the puppy is trained not to go in her crate. If she were left in the house, she would pee because she'sd not been housetrained. Crate training is a useful tool, but good only as far as it goes. It's necessary to confine a young puppy at night and when you're not home, but it doesn't replace house training. I believe in old-fashioned house training and I've never had a puppy who couldn't be trusted alone in the house bt 10 months.

You can easily train this puppy though, partly because at her age she has full bladder control and she's been startd with the crate. What you need to do now to house train her is simple. Keep her in the room with you so you can watch her. When she shows signs of needing to go (circling, acting restless), or she's had a long nap, been playing hard or just hasn't been out for a while, take her out.

You need to go out with her and the very second she pees, give her lots and lots of praise, then come right back in. This way she learns to differentiate between potty time and play time outside. Dogs learn very quickly through positive reinforcement and this way you're not giving her the chance to make a mistake and she clearly knows when she's done good.

I've house trained dozens of dogs this way and it works quickly - it's a snap with an adult or older puppy!

No it is not that same thing.
A puppy is crated trained when the people have been putting hte pup into a crate when they leve or can not watch the pup so it will not potty in the house. Most dogs sleep in the crate and most will not poop when they sleep. It is a safe place to put the puppy if you can not watch him all the time and a place when you go to bed where he can not get hurt or into something or make a mess of the house.
Just becasue a dog is used to being in the crate and does not throw a fit about being in the crate does not mean he is housebroken.
I would ask if the dog is house trained. As many dogs if let loose in the house will potty where ever they like as they are not going to have to sleep in it.

No, it's not the same.
When a breeder says that they usually mean that the puppy is trained to sleep in a crate overnight, not with other puppies or it's mom. It also stays in the crate when the people are out of the house. The breeder has probably started using the crate for house training. The crate is perfect for you to use for housetraining as well.

Technically, no. It means that she won't eliminate in her crate, not that she won't eliminate in the house. However, crate training is used to housetrain, as it prevents dogs from eliminating anywhere but outdoors. At her age I would expect that you will need to do a bit of work with her on housetraining. My dog was two before I attempted leaving her out of the crate during the day (she was one before I left her out overnight).

A crate is a tool in pet training. It can be used for many purposes.

Some are:

Teaching to eliminate outside.(puppy only gets time out of crate if he has eliminated outside).

Safe Haven. It provides a Den like setting where the dog feels safe. I've had my 9month Lab 2 weeks. I have already found her in the crate when I did not put her in there.

To settle. The crate can be one of the places reserved to take your dog to Settle, rest, place, etc. When they are wound up, not listening, hyper, pacing, etc you can set up a few places for them to settle down. you stay with them on leash until they settle. I like to teach them to place 20-30 minutes. One place is also my lap but they sometimes want to be left alone.

Safety for when you are gone, can't properly supervise them, etc

To prevent destruction. When you are away or can't properly supervise them.

A portable den. If there is a need to travel, being secure with a crate relieves their anxiety.

Never for discipline. Do not scold or force a dog into it's crate in anger.

Generally dogs won't soil where they sleep so in answer to your question, crate training a dog is a good way to help housebreak them. The first thing you need to do when letting her out of the crate is to take her outside and then praise her for doing her "business" out there. The other thing you need to do is pay attention to her signals that she needs to go outside. Good luck!

Crate trained means you use a crate (or cage, or kennel) as a tool to house train your dog. Dogs generally don't make in their crates.
