The Inquisition. A lot of old ladies had cats, and since a lot of people said old ladies were witches (because they really didn't have any use in society and people wanted their land), cats became associated with Satan and they nearly became extinct. Hence the rapid spread of the Black Plague - no cats to kill the rats.
Corn_Flake - the Egpytians did NOT sacrifice cats to Bast. Cats were demigods and absolutely sacred. Families would go into deep mourning when their cats died, and if a cat died under mysterious circumstances you were in deep trouble and better hope you could prove the cat's death was accidental and it wasn't poisoned or "murdered".
Blessed be.

Bastet replaced into an Egyptian goddess, a lady with a cat's head, who ruled fireplace, cats, the abode, and pregnant females. She replaced into no longer Roman, even with the actuality that she ought to have had some devotees in Rome, as Egypt *replaced into* area of the Roman Empire.

Well sadly Christianity, Judaism, and Islam spread and with their my way is the only right way attitude it pretty much wiped out other religions.
Yet many people today have reclaimed older religions and still practice them or atleast honor them in the practice of their religion. It is called paganism :)
I love Bast and pray to & honor Her often.
If you are interested in it you could do a search for Kemetic reconstructionism.

Egypt slowly died out...
I personally still research the ancient ways, though I do not follow them. Much wisdom can be found in the old ways...
And, Corn-Flake, that is not true. The Egyptians revered cats as Gods, they did not sacrifice them...

I think it was the dark ages and they turned on them and thought they were witches familiars. Meanwhile they did such a good job of keeping plague rat infestation down. Poor little kitties.

I thought cats were the Guardians of the Underworld...meaning that their presence kept evil spirits from surfacing (Like from the movie "The Mummy"). As for us...we used to be either Slaves, Slave drivers, Royalty, or Shamans...but not Gods...

They were Gods of sorts, so were dogs, alligators, birds, hippos. as for the cat, I think people just got sick and tired of their attitude and laziness.
