While registration papers are useful, they are no guarantee that a dog is purebred. Papers are only as good as the breeder of the dog. There have been many situations (especially with puppy mills/high volume breeders) in which an unethical breeder falsifies the paperwork -- the papers say the dog is purebred, but only the breeder knows the truth.

The best thing to do would not be just "look for a dog with papers", but go to a responsible, ethical breeder of GSDs or whatever breed you're looking for.

Good luck!

If you buy another puppy make sure you do some research check out akc.org, they have a wealth of info. Only buy from a breeder and not one from people who advertise in the paper or on the Internet because good breeders will not advertise this way. They do not have to because their puppies are usually sold even before they are born. You may have to wait for a puppy from a breeder but it is worth it because you will be getting a sound and healthy pup that will have a written heath guarantee (2 to 5 yrs) People that advertise on the net or in the newspaper are only looking to make money, they do not do necessary health screening and if they give you a guarantee it is usually for a year. A year is not good because most problems do not show up until after the first year of the dog's life. The most important thing you can do is research and I can not stress this enough. If you are going to pay big money on a dog then you should get one that is quality. Sure you maybe able to find one that is cheaper then a good breeder will charge but in the long run it when this dog ends up with health problems (they almost always do) it will cost you a lot more.

The only way to be really sure you're getting a purebred is to only buy from a breeder or at least buy a dog with papers. This will insure the dog is pure. You should also study the breed so you can see what you're looking for, colouring, size, coat, etc.

You can recognise a pure breed German Shepherd by his registration papers and pedigree. No papers, no pure-bred, just some backyard breeder selling you a pup (pun intended).

Unless you know of the dog's lineage, you could never be 100% certain that any dog is pure breed anything. That doesn't mean that a mix breed can't closely resemble a pure breed. Nor does it mean that a poorly bred pedigree can't appear to be a mix breed.

Go to a reputable breeder that raises champion German Shepherds.

Were you under the impression that your friend was giving away purebred German Shepherd pups?

Ask to see the dog's pedigree before buying. A purebred will have it's parents and entire family registered as purebreds with a kennel club.

If you didn't buy a REGISTERED animal from a reputable breeder & receive that PROOF of registration, lord knows what sort of mutt you got. If it IS registered...it's just PET-STUFF!! ALL dogs have faults...the more/worse..the LOWER the quality! Sounds like yours is EXTREMELY poor .

A reputable breeder will only sell purebred pups. Why not try petfinder.com? There are many purebreds that need a home!
