Not knowing the other colors in the room doesn't make for an easy answer. In one of my rooms I have a door that is a complement color to the light walls, dark trim and I picked up one of the colors from the couch. I think it looks great.
Do a search for interior decorating software and see if there is one that will let you design a room and play with the colors. This will give you a better idea.
Hope this helps.

There is no right way or wrong way, but here's a few suggestions:
If your wall colour contrasts greatly with your frame colour, then paint the door the same as the frame, or a shade darker of that colour ( off white). If you paint it the wall colour ( taupe ), the white frame looks like a racing stripe around the door.
If it is a panel door ( a door with moulding detail or raised panels ) this detailing is best accented subtley. Paint it the same as the frame or again, in a shade slightly lighter or darker..
If the room is large, or relatively uncluttered, you could paint the door a darker taupe,( almost brown ?). If it is a smaller room, this much contrast will make the room look busy.
If it is an exterior door, paint it completely different ( red, navy blue, black etc.) This is very "European".
If it is a French door, or a door with glass in it, again pick a striking accent colour.
Consider the use of the room it's in. Dining, living, master bedrooms - aim for a subtle look. Kids rooms, rec rooms, kitchens - can be more lively in colour or contrast.
All doors that open off one room or hall area should all be painted the same colour on that side. The inside of the doors can be a different colour to match the interior of the room they open into.
.Again, there really are no rules. I have even put wallpaper on doors. If you like it, it's right for you.

you should have the doors a lighter colour than the molding as this creates the illusion of space and doesnt draw attention to the door.
if the door is darker it emphasises the door and makes the room look smaller

Your door does not have to be painted the same color as your trim / molding. However, if you are going to paint them different colors, they should be significantly different...otherwise it will just look like you tried to match one or the other and missed.
