Emotionally healthy people pick balanced people to be around. Unhealthy people with holes pick people to fill those holes, regardless of their looks. For example, a girl who is shallow and want to be the best, will always pick people that buy into her "I'm the best" philosophy, and are willing to follow it.
In my opinion, humans do like to be around people, on a friend or relationship level, that are as good looking or better looking than they are. We all appreciate beauty, but remember that our ideas of beauty vary from person to person.
