The .270 wil do the job on any animal you want to shoot. It is also more popular so you can find ammo very easily anywhere you go. No so with the .280. If you get the .270 use a heavier bullet (150 grain) for elk, 130 for deer and pigs. You won't regret it.

I'd go .280 for the same reason as the other guy that mentioned it. Everyone's got a .270...OK not eveyone, and you'll have an easier time with more options going with the .270 as far as ammo's concerned...but I like to be a bit different than everyone else. Mostly for collective reasons.
Go to: www.reloadbench.com and compare the pros & cons of each...then find the right gun in both of those calibers. Either one is plenty enough for hog and whitetails and sufficient for elk. Good luck.

A Remington Model 700 in 7MM mag cal would be a good choice. Do not believe that there is anything wrong with this rifle! The ones that have problems have been tinkered with by someone who does not know what they are doing!! The 700 Trigger can be adjusted to an unsafe condition with the screws that are plainly visible when the action is removed from the stock. I have 30 plus years with them with no problems

For what you are describing both will work fine. A .270 is about a light as you would want to go on elk, but it is more than adequate. The 280 gives you a bit more bullet weight, but is not quite as flat shooting. I would look for a .270 WSM as a viable alternative or the .270 RUM as well.

For what you will be hunting, I would go with a 30-06 because of the wider range of bullets to hunt with. I have a Rem. 700 BDL in the 30-06. I have hunted everything from prairie dogs to long range (300 and 400 yards) Rocky Mtn. elk with great success. 7mm mag is another fine round, but in my opinion the .270 is a little light for elk but is ok under 250 yards.

I just bought a Ruger bolt in .280.I felt the 270 is too popular, and I've heard that 7mm cartridges have better accuracy.
Of course all of this is personal preference.I'd say see if you can shoot both and decide from there.

Find a ballistics website, If I were you I would consider a .300 Win mag. The ballistics are better than 7mm mag, .280, or .270,
and the price should be close to the same.

.270 and .280 are minimal for elk. consider
7mm mag. You can use 160gr accubond
ammunition and achieve more kinetic energy
which would be beneficial for elk.
