For Christmas, I mean. He is 20 and will be coming over for Christmas with his relatives this year. We don't know him very well and have only seen him 3 times in his life. All we know is he has moved around a lot, dresses pretty grungy and doesn't do much (doesn't work). I know that sounds bad but that's pretty much all the info I have on him.

Just in case this is a factor in your answer, he doesn't live with his parents. He roams around a lot.

As a college student myself, I would suggest a gift card to a grocery store. That way he can get things that he might not normally buy, maybe someplace a little more special like Trader Joe's. I happen to love to cook, so this may be more something I would like, but I know a lot of my friends would appreciate not having to budget for food for a little while.

That's a tough question. I guess you could chat with your Brother/Sister and see what your Nephew is interested in.
Some of the things you may consider: Gift cards/Certificates for Music,Movies,Books,Video Games,Clothing, or Toilettries. I know this sounds kind of impersonal but unless you know a little about his interests then you are limited by what you can get him.

I am the mom to a 19 year old college student. The main thing on his mind is eating! If you could get a gift card for the young man that could be used in his area and attach it to other food...like a box of candy...I think that would be good. Good luck.

I think the best bet is to give him the cash. If you give him a gift card he might not go cash it in. And any other electronics he will most likely to hock to get cash anyways. I'd say about 25 bucks.
Good luck. And keep an eye on all your stuff he might take it.

if he roams around a lot, i certainlly wouldn't get him a best buy gift card, seeing as that he probably doesn't have much property anyway. i would give him like $20 and forget about it. you've only seen him like 3 times in your life, you may not see him again for another 10-20 years (if ever), so i wouldn't sweat it at all. if he doesn't like it, so what, you don't know him & he hasn't made any effort to get to know you. i think he's lucky to even get that much!

Ask his other relatives what he likes and take it from there. You can then get a gift card from a store that sells things of his interest.

A gift card would be your best bet. Ask his parents where he likes to shop. Or maybe Best Buy, WalMart, Target, Sears.

Ditto Holly W. All guys like best buy, or some other electronics store, especially college-aged guys. I wouldn't suggest money because it may be misused.
