I just started tanning to build up a base tan for a trip to Mexico. However, I went with a friend to go get a tattoo and now find myself in a pickle... I know it harms it if exposed directly to the tanning bed, but if i place a towel over it (the tattoo is roughly the size of my palm and I have been using a folded washcloth and sports tape to hold it over the tat when I go tanning) shouldn;t it be good?

Oh yea... and I know tanning is bad for me... its not like this is a regular thing...

If it is a fresh tattoo, you need to wait until it is done with its initial healing before you go out in the sun. Most artists will tell you to wait anywhere from 3-8 weeks before allowing extreme sun exposure. And its because during that time, the tattoo is more likely to fade, lose ink and become blurry if you don't take care of it.

If I were you, wait until the tattoo peels and finishes healing. If you are really worried about it, call the artist.

I wouldn't suggest going to the tanning bed right after you got it, but i understand your situation. If you are at the stage where you can put regular lotion on it USE A LOTION WITH SPF 15 to protect your tattoo, depending on where it is(i.e. your back, chest, or hip) you might want to use a stand up tanning bed. And when you go to mexico use sunscreen!!! and if you are still in the healing stage (two to three weeks after you got it) then I would suggest you not submerge it in water, you should know this if they told you about after care but if not then i will. And in the future if you plan on going to the beach don't get a tattoo at least two months before you go...

tanning beds are stupid.

but some advice for Mexico - get the baby sunscreen its the strongest and use alot of it everyday and remember to put it on the tat again when you get out of the water.

Since its a new tat, be very careful. You can get sun poisoning on it and ruin all of the work.

NO!!!!! I work in a tanning salon and that not ok. Tattoos are VERY light sensitive. Thats why they tell you not to expose it in direct sunlight for 6 weeks. You dont want to get an infection or ruin your tattoo

Like the others said, tanning is bad for your skin! i understand why you do it but, it's not good for your skin! and.. you shouldn't do anything with a fresh tattoo yet, especially not tanning!

tanning will fade the tattoo, but try keeping it covered. Most tanning salons sell "sunblock" made just for tattoos to protect the color, that's what i have always used!

putting sunscreen on your tattoo will not protect it from the sun. the rays will still break down the ink. keeping it completely covered will protect it.

Don't go to tanning beds in the first place! Do you want to get skin cancer?
