It wouldn't be TOTALLY pointless. But consider this, if your body were a machine (in a manner of speaking it is), if you want it to run well, you've got to give it the right kind of fuel. As a junk food junky, I can tell you that if you REALLY get into this, the more you do, the less junk you'll want to eat. Your body will tell you what to eat. And she's (the young lady somwhere above my post) is right, cut or definition shows better when theire less fat between the muscle and skin. Sugar is instant energy. What doesn't get used immediately, gets stored for use on a later date. That will be the fat.
When first starting out, please be careful. You will have people telling you to "Feel the burn." That "burn" is the muscle breaking (tearing) down. A little pain is alright and is to be expected, but if you over do it, you can REALLY put yourself in the hurt locker. Expect to be a little sore for about the first two weeks, after that, it should be nothing but progress. Drink lots of water and eat right. And after you've been at it a while, you may see yourself reaching a plateau and not see any new progress, when this happens, change up your work out routine. If you don't you'll just get frustrated and fatiqued and may even quit.

It depends on what you want the outcome to be. If you are a skinny guy and you want to add some muscle to you then you need to gain weight in order to put on any muscle mass. So therefore eating good or bad food as long as you eat enough will allow you to gain the wieght which in turn will build muscle mass if you work out hard enough.
But if you already have enough fat on you say between 18-25% body fat then you don't need to gain anymore weight, you can use what you already have as energy and convert that to muscle mass. So in that case eating good food which will not put too extra fat on you would be the way to go.
Either way though eating healthy food as opposed to bad food has other benifits besides those that come with working out.

Please do not pay attention to some of these people. I am a personal trainer and you cannot just eat anything that you want to gain weight. After a hard weight training workout, you have about 30 to 45 minutes to pack in 20-30grams of protein. (more if your muscles will need it). Protein is what builds your sarcomeres back together. When you weight train, you are actually tearing the muscle fibers apart. The protein is what builds them back. You need to increase your caloric intake as well, but with good foods. I would love to give you more details than have you listen to some of these people who give horrible and dangerous advice when they have no clue what they are talking about. BTW-- "DOC": The muscle burn is actually the build up of lactic acid. This kind of misinformation is exactly what I am talking about.

eating is 95% of muscle gain. All the working out in the world will not create any muscle mass at all if your not taking in a huge amount of protein after your workouts. Trust me I know. You need to do some research.

Protein builds and repairs muscle. I you dont eat a substantial amont of protein then you wont get any bigger im afraid. Eat lots of chicken, fish, beans and eggs with veg and some rice. This will help you build muscle. Protein whey drinks are also good for a post workout snack.

eating unhealthy isnt good for you period. but should not affect muscle gain. you can build the muscle, but how much of it shows (defined look) is due to how much fat you have on top of the muscle. and if u arent eating healthy and have that layer of fat you wont see the muscle as well as if you were less fat.
