no matter how many people say that they hate homework, and they reckon that there shouldn't be any. doesn't stop the fact that homework is there in the best interest of the students. it helps them show whether they understand the lessons they are being taught. they may not like having to do it, but it is part of the course of their education. with no homework a lot of people will think that they have a good undestanding of a subject. however, when exam time comes around, many students will indeed fail because they do not know as much as they thought. even if they do understand what they are taught, homework is their to help the students to apply the knowledge that they have been taught. without homework people will understand the subject, but no be able to apply any of the knowledge

Yes there should be homework! It aids in helping you to develop independent learning! Like you when I was at school I used to think what is the point of homework and why should I bother learning my times-tables because I can just use a calculator, etc! But since growing up and looking back, school it is not all about gaining knowledge; the purpose of school is to help develop your capacity to learn, to improve cognitive processes, and as I mentioned earlier to develop independence. You may not realise this all now, but when you grow up and are able to reflect you will see that school is not pointless and homework does serve a purpose.

When I was at school I didnt do my homework at all. Failed every exam, I wish I knew what I do now. I know at the time you would rather be doing anything but homework. You have just got in from school and the last thing you want to do is more.
But when you leave school you still have a very long life ahead of you. Apply yourself now and you will reap the rewards later in life.

No no no!! I think things have gone a bit far with regards to homework for children under 7, but after that they certainly need to be learning outside of school and preparing for the stuff they're doing in school. I also think though that it's the parents' responsibility to provide some education at home too!

I blame the parents. Fine if the kid has been off sick or fallen a bit behind with some task - then they can bring the work home to catch up for the next day. But there are a lot of competitive people out there who think they aren't getting value for money unless their tiny children are lugging home a big sack of homework. Daft.

How do you expect to learn anything if you don't practice using your mind?? When I went to school, I had homework and lots of it every night. It was part of the education process. Of course, we didn't have video games, lots of TV, and many of the distractions that you have now. I vote for the homework. It is the instrument that taught me how to learn to spell, do math problems, and write my thoughts on paper. Easy? No, it wasn't easy, and it is not easy for you either, but do you think the real world is easy? I know it is not, so buckle down, throw away your lazy ways, and get busy. You will reap the rewards of your time spent.

In a perfect world, children in public school would be able to learn all things needed during school hours. However, ours is not a perfect world. Teachers aren't equipped to deal with class sizes, federal and state requirements that are usually asinine, and children that are constant disruptions. They spend so much time telling the kids to sit down and shut up, all they have time for is to teach them HOW to take the government test so the school can get more money. That's why you have homework.

I'd say homework is a form of compulsory overtime, and that other than doing revision at home in order to prepare for a test or an exam, there should be none.

my view on this is that teachers have us all day to teach us what they need to. we spend at least 7 hours at school everyday for the purpose of learning (some spend more because of sports and other extracurriculars). i think that time after school should be spent with family, friends, or just hanging out. i have soooo much homework every night that I never have time for anything else. school is no longer just something i do in the morning and afternoon, it's taking up my whole life. i think that is absolutely horrible. i think that teachers should just use the time they have and not try to take up our whole lives.....school work should be done at school, not home.

At my daughters school, she was given the option as to whether she wanted to do homework. The same question is posed to the children each time they go up a year.
She chose to do homework.
