I've never seen a negative epitaph, does this mean epitaphs are not a true reflection of a person's character?

My boyfriend was going to buy me a head stone for my birthday last year, coz he didn't want to get me something I wouldn't use! He said he would have written "here lies..." so that I could use it as a headboard until the time came that I would need it!?!

No headstone I have ever seen has had anything negative on it. As an athiest, I don't think I would like a head stone. I wouldn't mind being planted under a tree or something not so morbid!

Mav thinks epitaphs are something that finds the best part of a person and uses that.

Some just say

No epitaph just cremated and scattered to the four winds.

Actually, I saw there is a gravestone in Clanton, AL (where my dad grew up) that he used to show us. The guy carved the headstone himself before he died.

It talked about how he was going to prove all the Christian churchgoers that he was right about there being no God and no heaven. It was just really nasty about everyone had always been mean to him.

I've always remembered it because it was so honest and not so idealized

My ideal epitaph " Here lie the remains of the oldest recorded human, who died while having sex during a sky-diving accident."

I'm planning to be cremated and scattered but you never know what heirs will do. So they will probably give me a headstone with name and dates of birth and death on it.
But if I get my choice I'd like, "did not work and play well with others"

I have asked my wife to put Finally Gone Fishing on my headstone. As I keep promising myself to go but never seem to find the time.
