The National Guard is a reserve component of the US Army. Members of the Guard are part of the US Army but - in peacetime - report to the state governors. This dual federal and state role allows soldiers in the National Guard to perform missions that 'Federal' soldiers are legally barred from doing. (Such as law enforcement.)

All National Guard soldiers must meet the same standards as their active duty counterparts. And National Guard units are organized identically to an equalivalent active duty unit.

A typical National Guard soldier holds a civilian job and drills one weekend each month and attends a two week training period every year.

When called to federal service the soldiers and the unit leave the National Guard and become part of the active duty army. (As a result technically there are no 'National Guard' units in Iraq. They are all 'US Army' and revert to National Guard status after they return home.)

One of the unique aspects of the National Guard is that these are true 'citizen-soldiers.' In ordinary times they are ordinary people who have jobs, go to school and live the same lives as everybody else. In time of emergency they stand ready to protect their communities and their nation. There are Guard soldiers who have gone to Iraq, returned home then - a few months later - were rescuing people from the floodwaters in New Orleans.

'Civilian in peace, soldier in war - I am the Guard"
