I have answered this question before and it is most definitely of absolutely no harm. The notion is an old one and parents were simply trying to frighten children into avoiding this sometimes annoying habit. The sound is not from bones but rather from shifts of fluid in these small joints. I 'crack' my knuckles daily (and I just did so) although my Mother told me it was harmful. I am 55 and my fingers and hands look, feel, and work quite normally. Sorry Mom.
