I don't know a single parent that doesn't have issues with getting children to go to bed at bedtime. What is it about children that makes them want to stay up when they are obviously tired?

Because they don't want to miss anything. All the things that you see every day are old news to you...but to a toddler or baby, it's all brand new. Everything they see is new, they want to discover everything and figure it out. Their little minds are developing, and when they get sleepy, it just gets in the way of their discovering time.

My oldest daughter sleeps very little. Since she was a toddler, she rises with the sun, no matter how dark her room was or how active the day before had been. Where we live, rising with the sun could mean we have a very active little girl at five in the morning. She rarely took a nap when she was little. She is active during the day, alert, a good learner, has good appetite and is overall a happy girl. She tends to be on the short side of the growth spectrum, but she comes from a family of shorties and it isn't an alarming factor for her doctors. They seem pretty convinced that once she hits puberty she will grow like weed. Even if she doesn't, she's healthy and isn't sleep deprived. To us, she's just wired to that way.

Babies and young children have a 'window of tiredness' which can be overcome if not put down for a nap at the right time. They almost get a 'second wind' of energy. You just need to put them down at the first signs of being tired. Use soothing music, rocking then gently or stroking their head. Then leave them. They may cry but they will eventually drop off to sleep.

I think they are afraid they will miss something. Their life is still fun and they spend most of their time playing, then have a hard time winding down after all the excitment. They don't realize they can just wake up and play some more.

Children and babies do not have a central nervous system that is fully operational and there ability to reason is not there.. Going to bed, especially for children is scary. Think about it. Most kids are afraid of going to bed, being alone, same as babies.

Wouldn't you be interested in all this new stuff if you'd just come into a brand new world? I know my neice doesn't like to go to bed when we're over because she doesn't want to miss anything. It's just their curiousity.

They don't want to miss anything. When my kids don't wants to go to sleep I use reverse psycology, this sounds mean but it works. I tell them they have to play all night and can't go to bed. It is actually funny because there like no no I 'll go to sleep.

Their afraid if they do, then they'll miss something even though to us there is nothing around, to them anything is everything they need and they don't want to miss a beat of what ever it is

I think it's not just about not missing anything.
Your kids idealize you. You stay up late, and they want to be like you. They will want to copy everything you do.
