It's extremely important for any musician to memorize all of the major and minor scales....including melodic and harmonic minors. With jazz and any other improvisation it is imperative because you must know what notes will sound good over the accompanying chord. Overall, it will make you a more well-rounded performer if you know your scales.

practice a lot and the scales willl come automatically. for better feel practice with a group.
