squint or strabismus in - medical parlance - is a condition arising out of the imbalance between the extra ocular muscles or the muscles which control the way the eyeball moves.this can be from birth or it can be acquired. it may be due to causes related to the brain or it may be due to local causes of the muscles themselves.

usually the pathology lies in the nerve supply of these muscles.

another very importan cause is refractive error.this means that the eye may not be seeing correctly and so the squint develops as a corrective measure. in certain children when they read very close to their eyes accomadative squint develops.

if the squint is due to a refractive error the treatment involves correction of the same. this may be by glasses, contact lenses or by LASIK(laser assisted in situ keratomileusis).

in case the squint is only correctable by surgery it is preferable to do the same as visual deterioration is a serious complication if left unattended.

rest assured that this condition is not cured by drops, syrups and tablets!

recently a new surgical procedure has been developed in singapore which involves a micro incision,no stitches and no pad squint surgery with the patient returning to work the same day!
