In our office (it's a racing one), we use The Thoroughbred Business Guide. It has a diary listing all GB and IRE racing as well as major dates across the rest of the world. It also has an alphabetical directory of people and companies involved in racing, from racecourses to jockeys, studs to trainers. I use it all the time and it is totally invaluable.
It measures 6" by 9.5" and is about an inch thick.
