What i mean by Standard is. What in the barrel when you first buy the gun.

Yours should come with Full, Modified, and Improved choke tubes. Mine came with both barrels in the 870 Mag Express Combo, which came with a 28" vent rib barrel w/ 3 choke tubes and a 20" rifled barrel with sights. I replaced those peeps with TruGlo's. If you don't want to spend the money on a new barrel or have the time to find one, get a rifled choke tube. A 20 year old college kid sat a couple hundred yards from me this past weekend and took a huge 8 pointer with a rifled slug out of an 870 with mod. choke.....in a rifle zone, no less.
You don't need to use sabots in the rifled barrel like one of the other guys mentioned, although they tend to be a bit more accurate. I've used Brenneke slugs for years in it and they've worked just fine. The new Hornady SST's with ballistic tips are the best out there right now, and what I'll be using this 2nd weekend of gun season in WI. Good luck.

The standard gun comes with a modified choke tube. You'd be better off to buy the rifled choke tube for slugs. It sells for around $30-40. My 870 will put the cheap Remington 1 oz. Slugger slugs in a 3 inch circle at 50 yards all day long with the rifled tube.

I also use the 870. I have found that i use rifled slugs through my smooth bore barrel and an IC Choke tube. You can spend the money to buy a rifled barrel, or even buy a rifled choke tube, but then you need to use sabot slugs. The rifled slugs are much cheaper, and in my opinion are just about as good. The rifled slugs do not have quite the distance as a rifled barrel, but the impact from a rifled slug is huge! Good luck!

Generally all shotguns come with a full, modified, improved and skeet choke tubes. The best to use would be modified or improved if hunting. Finally if the slug fits in the barrel and meets the specified size requirements for the gun I don't see why you couldn't shoot a slug through it.

I own an 870. mine came with modified choke in the barrell. I would recomend purchasing a slug barrell if your going to use it as a slug gun.

I would buy a slug barrel. You will tear up the choke and barrel if you shoot slugs through it. It won't happen all at once, but over time, it will wear and tear more on the gun. It is your gun, so your call. Just my two cents.

Depends on what you mean by 'standard'.Slugs will shoot through any choke size, but improved cylinder and cylinder chokes give the best accuracy.

you can shoot 2 3/4 inch or 3 inch slugs out of that gun if it is stock. there will be some wear on it. i suggest a winchester riffled barrel. I love my remington 1100 with winchester barrel.
