After a car accident, any tips on getting the most for an insurance claim. I believe the car is totaled. They have yet to look at it.

But I want to be prepared on what to expect because I've never been through this before I heard insurance agencies have a tendency to shaft you.

dont get a layer they would get the money ....first get an estimate from the dealer to fix it .2nd find a used car same type and as close as condition as yours thats for sale ...now see wich is less ..thats what you will get .if they total your car press them into buying the used car for you they wont but you may get the cash......if you sue this will take about 2 years to settle

You'll be paid the actual cash value of the vehicle if it is totaled and the insurance company will be able to provide supportng documentation as to how the figures were determined. I don't think that's considered shafting. Unfortunately, people get attached to their cars, they think they are worth a lot more than they are. They think that because they maintained them the offer should be higher, when in fact it is automatically assumed that you took care of the car's needs as far as maintenence.

The total loss offer is somewhat negotiable, but don't expect to win big numbers over the initial offer. It's pretty written in stone.

If it's repairable then the cost to repair it will be paid. How is that shafting?

Well as long as it is NOT your fault- otherwise you'll get absolutely nothing. (unless you have full coverage). It is well worth it to get a good lawyer, I don't know why, but lawyers have a way of sucking money out of just about anybody~ including ins. companies! lol
Good luck :}
