Are Tom and Katie a good example of how Scientologists really are? Or are they a little shall we say excentric? I ask because I am a Christian, and I wouldn't want to be judged based on how you see Mel Gibson portrayed in the press.

The Dixie Chicks problems were self-inflicted... They failed to recognize/relate to their fan base... The media had very little to do with the outrage surrounding them. If Tom Cruise's primary fan base was a bunch our roudy redneck patriotic American's and he made the kind of comments that the Dixie Chicks made, he would have had the same issues...

The question is not so much about religion as it is whether Tom and Katie are considered to possitive examples of Scientology. I understand media bias and gossip columns. For example, I heard on the news today that Tom took his "best man" on the honeymoon with them... That seems strange to me... maybe not to other Scientologists.

What you see of any celebrity via the media (press or TV) isn't
usually going to be a "good example" of who they really are. What sells is "dirt", contraversy, etc.
Especially in Hollywood. This has been going on since the beginning in the 1920's and 30's when they stated the "gossip columns". Now it's a huge industry which has to be fed continuously. If they can get away with it and even if they can't (They get sued) it's still worth it financially. That's why they all have lawyers on board (the media) to weigh the costs of what they can get away with.
If a celebrity creates a successful career and is also active in
other areas of his or her life, cares about his fellow man, like Tom Cruise, he's a target for attack.
Look at what happened to the Dixie Chix, and all that happened
because the lead singer spoke up, gave her opinion. She didn't even DO anything.
You don't get to find out about what Tom Cruise is really like, what he does, how many people he helps.
The media builds the celebrity up into something excentric and
larger than life so that they can knock them down first chance they get.
Martha Stewart, Michael Jackson, Brittany Spears,Mel Gibson...... the list goes on. It has nothing to do with religion.
The thing they can't figure out about Tom Cruise is he just keeps on being successful caring about his fans and people in general and doing and saying what he thinks is right. It doesn't matter what they do or say about him.
Now that IS a very good example of what a Scientologist is all about.
I should know , I've been a Scientologist for 34 years. I also know and care a lot more about Tom Cruise and what he does and is doing for his fellowman than his "celebrity".You will never find out what he is really like via the press or media.
As for his new wife Katie, looks to me like she loves the man.(Not the "celebrity")

No, public figures like Tom Cruise, John Travolta and the like are not your typical scientologists, they are just publicity for that pathetic UFO cult.

Please do not give them even the benefit of the doubt!

I've wondered that myself...and I'd say to have an open mind. John Travolta is also a Scientologist, and I really admire his atttitude and his outlook. He just seems doen to earth...May it's just "TomKat"...he seems kinda off the wall!!!

What?
I think you have celeb-anxiety. Relax.
Scientology isn't a religion anyway.
