(this applies to EVERYTHING you could learn)
When I get stuck in a subject, I review the fundamentals of the subject.
You know how to factor real numbers? 120 = 5x4x3x2 as an example
You know how to use the FOIL method for 2nd degrees polynomials?
You know the little tricks, like opposites (x-2)(x+2)=x^2-4
or (X-2)^2* (x+2)^2 = (x^4+16)??
there is no easy way to learn these techniques but to do them over and over. I think sometimes the first derivative can give a clue on how to factor , but if you can't factor I'm not sure you would know how to take the derivative

Well, I'm in college and just finished factoring polynomials. I have a great professor. Much better then in high school, and she gives some EXCELLENT notes. Unfortunately they are not online. =(
So, the only advice I can give is to PRACTICE. The only way to understand factoring is to do as many problems as ya can!
Oh, and I was able to scan the great method of notes that she gave us, so I'll try and email it to you! Good luck!

The only way to get good at factoring polynomials is through experience. The only way to get the experience is through practice. You got to be able to just look at the polynomial and know what to do with it.

It really does require lots of practice and paying attention to order when doing those blasted things!
Here's a god site to help you check your answers though:
